GRAMMY® Award-winning and acclaimed alternative rock pioneers The Smashing Pumpkins took to the road last year for their first tour in nearly 20 years to feature founding members Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin, and James Iha. No D’arcy Wretzky, though. (Last I heard she was in legal trouble for letting some horses loose in my grandparents’ tiny little farming community in Watervliet, Michigan!)
No, D’arcy? No problem. Longtime SP member Jeff Schroeder will man guitar duties. As for the bass? Jack Bates, who has played with New Order and Joy Division will be assigned those duties. Oh! And, the incredibly talented (not to mention gorgeous) Katie Cole, who toured as the band’s bassist on the band’s recent tour, is coming on the road to play keys.
“Some 30 years ago, as The Smashing Pumpkins, James Iha and I began a musical journey in the cramped rear bedroom of my Father’s house. And so it’s magic to me that we’re able to coalesce once more around the incredible Jimmy Chamberlin, to celebrate those songs we’ve made together,” shared Corgan.
The monumental Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour 2018 coincided with the 30th anniversary of the band’s formation, will highlight music from the group’s inception through 2000, and will exclusively feature material from their groundbreaking debut ‘Gish’ through ‘Siamese Dream,’ ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,’ ‘Adore,’ and ‘Machina.’ It went on to sell over 300,000 tickets! Critics were quick to praise the tour as “a massive gift to their fans” (Uproxx), “a welcome reminder of why those early albums resonated in the first place” (SPIN), and “an unforgettably rewarding and often spectacular odyssey” (Forbes).
Formed in Chicago, IL in 1988, The Smashing Pumpkins released their heralded debut album Gish in 1991 and found mainstream success with 1993’s 4x multi-platinum ‘Siamese Dream’ and 1995’s 10x multi-platinum ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.’ With nine studio albums and over 30 million albums sold to date, the GRAMMY®, MTV VMA, and American Music Award-winning band remains an influential force in alternative rock.
Noel Gallagher has been one of the UK’s most loved and successful songwriters for over a quarter of a century. His latest album, ‘Who Built the Moon?’ debuted at #1 in the UK and was certified gold in less than two weeks of it’s release and marked his 10th consecutive chart-topping studio album in the UK — a feat no other artist has ever achieved. After leaving Oasis, Noel successfully launched his solo career as Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds with a self-titled album in 2011 which sold 2.5 million albums worldwide. Noel is the former lead guitarist and principal songwriter of Oasis, the 3X GRAMMY-nominated UK rock band. Oasis quickly became one of the biggest bands in the world in the 90s, selling over 70 million albums worldwide to date, but, more than that, their music became the soundtrack of a generation.
AFI will open the show.
