Gin Blossoms / Tonic / Vertical Horizon

One of the greatest bands to reign on the Billboard charts in the ’90s (and of this preview writer’s all-time top ten favorites), Gin Blossoms return to North East Ohio for a headlining show at Hard Rock Rocksino on Thursday, June 14!

The Tempe, Arizona natives indelible jangle-pop sound was evolving during radio’s diverse mix of hair bands and grunge music superstars. They qualified to perform at the South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin Texas in 1989. That same year, College Music Journal dubbed them “The Best Unsigned Band In America” and added an invitation to perform on MTV’s New Music Awards in New York City. Their breakout record, ‘New Miserable Experience’ was where their rise to fame began. This album kept the band on the chart for almost 3 years with singles “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” Until I Fall Away,” “Mrs. Rita,” and “Found Out About You.” The crossover hits on ‘New Miserable Experience’ played on 4 radio formats and, to date, have sold over 5 million records.

Those hits were followed up by “Til I Hear It From You” which rocketed to #1 and moved the ‘Empire Records’ smash soundtrack to platinum status. The track also became Canada’s longest-running #1 hit of 1995, its #1 tenure lasting six weeks. This song was co-written with the great Marshall Crenshaw and Billboard described it as “the closest thing to a perfect pop song to hit radio in recent memory.” Their next gem, “Follow You Down” spent ten weeks in the top 10, and “As Long As It Matters” earned the band a Grammy nomination for “Best Performance by a Duo or Group” making their ‘Congratulations I’m Sorry’ record another multi-radio format favorite and multi-platinum success.

After a hiatus, Gin Blossoms returned to their glory in the early to mid-’00s with extensive cross-country tours. The band released new records, ‘Major Lodge Victory’ (2006) and ‘No Chocolate Cake’ (2010) as well as live recordings.

In February 2017 the band went back in the studio recording a new album in time for release this Summer. Fans will get a taste of the new album as it works its way into their live set beginning this April. The album, titled ‘Mixed Reality,’ will be released one day after the show at the Rocksino.

(Very) special guest Tonic has earned two Grammy nominations. The band was formed in 1993 by Emerson Hart and Jeff Russo. Signed to a recording contract in 1995, the band released its debut album, ‘Lemon Parade’ in 1996. The single “If You Could Only See” reached No. 11 on the Billboard Airplay Hot 100, and ‘Lemon Parade’ itself reached platinum status.

Tonic spent much of the next two years touring, adding to its reputation as a relentlessly gigging band. In addition to extensive touring Tonic produced other work, including songs for feature film soundtracks. After self-producing its 1999 album ‘Sugar,’ Tonic released its third album ‘Head on Straight’ in 2002. Tonic received two Grammy nominations from ‘Head on Straight,’ including one for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for “Take Me As I Am,” and one for Best Rock Album. After a hiatus, during which frontman Emerson Hart released a stellar solo album, the band regrouped, embarking on a tour and releasing a greatest-hits compilation, all of which served as a prelude to their fourth studio album, 2010’s ‘Tonic.’ After the release of that album, Tonic has continued to tour and remain active into the year 2016, when they released an all-acoustic version of ‘Lemon Parade’ titled ‘Lemon Parade Revisited’ in celebration of that album’s 20th anniversary and which utilized direct funding from fans

Three-hit wonder Vertical Horizon, who made splashes with their singles “Everything You Want,” “You’re a God,” and “Best I Ever Had,” will open the show.
